Arsenal are on the verge of completing a €73.5 million (£63.5 million) deal to sign Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, with the transfer expected to be finalized within the next 24 hours.
Sources have confirmed to BBC Sport that an agreement between the two clubs is now largely in place, with only minor details left to finalize. The Gunners are pushing to conclude the deal in time for Gyokeres to join their squad for this summer’s pre-season tour of Asia, which begins later this week.
The agreed package, which includes performance-related add-ons, represents an improvement on Arsenal’s previous €70 million (£60 million) offer. Gyokeres, 27, has already agreed to a five-year contract with the North London club.
Arsenal shifted their focus to the Swedish forward after failing to reach a breakthrough in talks to sign RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko. Sporting director Andrea Berta reportedly traveled to Lisbon late last week to take charge of negotiations, underlining the club’s determination to get the deal over the line.
Tensions have risen in recent days between Sporting and Gyokeres after the Portuguese club’s president, Frederico Varandas, confirmed the striker was facing disciplinary measures for failing to report for pre-season training. Speaking to local media, Varandas insisted that “no one is above the interests of the club.”
Gyokeres has been prolific in Portugal, scoring 97 goals in 102 appearances and helping fire Sporting to back-to-back league titles. He enjoyed a remarkable campaign last season, registering 54 goals in 52 games. The former Brighton and Coventry City striker has yet to publicly explain his absence from training amid the transfer speculation.
If completed, Gyokeres would become one of Arsenal’s marquee signings of the summer as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his attacking options ahead of the new season.
