Ghana football star Thomas Partey to deny rape charges in UK Court

Ghana international footballer Thomas Partey is expected to deny new rape allegations during a court hearing in the United Kingdom, as his long-running legal case continues to draw attention in both Europe and Africa, according to BBC.

The 32-year-old midfielder, who previously played for Arsenal and now features for Spanish side Villarreal CF, has been charged with additional counts of rape linked to an alleged incident involving one woman in 2020. The new charges were presented before Westminster Magistrates’ Court, where the court was told the player intends to plead not guilty.
The latest allegations come on top of earlier charges filed in 2025, when prosecutors accused Partey of five counts of rape involving two women, as well as one count of sexual assault against a third complainant. Those alleged offences are said to have taken place between 2021 and 2022 while he was playing in the English Premier League.
During previous hearings at Southwark Crown Court, the Ghanaian international formally entered not-guilty pleas to the earlier charges and was granted bail under conditions that include restrictions on contacting the complainants and requirements to notify authorities about travel. A full trial in the case is expected to take place in late 2026.
The new accusations reportedly surfaced after police received additional complaints in 2025, prompting prosecutors to authorize further charges related to an alleged incident that predates the earlier claims.
Partey has continued his professional career while the legal proceedings are ongoing, remaining eligible to play for his club and the Ghana national team under UK bail rules, as the court process moves forward.
The case has generated widespread reaction in Ghana and across the African diaspora, where Partey is considered one of the country’s most prominent footballers, having represented the Black Stars at major tournaments including the World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations.
