Abuja, Nigeria – August 8, 2025 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his deepest condolences to Ghana following the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the incident as “a profound tragedy that has cast a dark shadow over the West African region.” He conveyed heartfelt sympathy to Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama, the government, and the people of Ghana, assuring them that Nigeria stands in solidarity during this period of mourning.

“We have lost dedicated patriots who served their nation with honour and distinction,” Tinubu said. “Their sacrifice in the line of duty will be remembered not only in Ghana but across the region. On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, I extend prayers for the repose of their souls and comfort for the bereaved families.”

The President urged Ghanaians to remain united in the face of grief, noting that the fallen officials had been on their way to address pressing national challenges, including illegal mining and environmental degradation.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement, describing the deaths as “a devastating loss that leaves a profound void in the West African community.” The ministry praised the dedication of the late ministers and reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties with Ghana.

The Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 helicopter went down on August 6 in the Sikaman area of the Ashanti Region while en route from Accra to Obuasi. All eight people on board perished, including senior government officials, a party leader, and three Air Force crew members. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

President Tinubu’s message comes as regional leaders and international partners continue to send tributes to Ghana, underscoring the cross-border impact of the tragedy.
