UNESCO RECOGNIZES SIERRA LEONE FOR GOLA–TIWAI COMPLEX

In a landmark achievement for conservation and heritage in West Africa, Sierra Leone has secured its first-ever UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. The internationally celebrated Gola–Tiwai Complex, encompassing the Gola Rainforest National Park and the Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary, was officially inscribed on the UNESCO list on July 13, 2025.

The announcement marks a pivotal moment for the small West African nation, elevating the Gola–Tiwai Complex onto the global stage and recognizing it as a site of “Outstanding Universal Value” for both biodiversity and cultural heritage.

“This is a proud moment for Sierra Leone. It is not only a win for conservation but also a statement that our natural treasures are world-class,” said Dr. Memunatu Pratt, Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs.

  • The Gola–Tiwai Complex boasts extraordinary biodiversity. The region is home to:

    • Over 1,000 plant species, including 113 endemics

    • 448 species of birds, such as the elusive white-necked rockfowl

    • 55 mammal species, including chimpanzees, pygmy hippos, forest elephants, pangolins, and the endangered Diana monkey

Its ecological significance is reinforced by its role in preserving one of the last intact stretches of Upper Guinean rainforest—a critical habitat under threat across West Africa.

The inscription follows decades of conservation efforts led by local communities and supported by organizations including the Environmental Foundation for Africa, the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone, and international partners like the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).

Beyond wildlife protection, the Gola project has become a model of community-driven sustainability:

  • 600 educational scholarships are provided annually.

  • Over 2,500 farmers have received training in sustainable agriculture.

  • Women’s groups and youth cooperatives receive microfinance and eco-tourism training.

Sierra Leone has declared 2025 its “Year of Ecotourism,” and the new UNESCO designation is expected to dramatically boost tourism interest and green investment.

The government is also exploring the creation of a transboundary peace park linking Gola Forest in Sierra Leone with similar protected areas in neighboring Liberia—an initiative that blends conservation with regional peacebuilding.

“We are proud to share this milestone with the world,” said President Julius Maada Bio in a congratulatory message. “This designation reflects the resilience of our people and our commitment to protecting what makes Sierra Leone special.”

The National Tourist Board is rolling out promotional campaigns, while the Ministry of the Environment plans to expand ranger training, anti-poaching efforts, and eco-lodge development around the heritage site.

With this recognition, Sierra Leone joins the ranks of nations safeguarding world heritage, and the Gola–Tiwai Complex stands as a symbol of hope—for the environment, for communities, and for future generations.
