The United States embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert warning American citizens in Nigeria about a possible terrorist threat targeting U.S. government facilities and affiliated institutions in the country.

In a notice released late Monday, the embassy advised U.S. nationals to exercise heightened caution when visiting the embassy in the capital, Abuja, the U.S. consulate in Lagos, and schools linked to the United States.
The embassy did not provide specific details about the nature of the threat but urged Americans to remain vigilant and follow security guidance issued by U.S. authorities.
The warning comes at a time of heightened security concerns following coordinated military strikes carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran, which have raised tensions across several regions.
Nigerian authorities have also reportedly increased security patrols in parts of Abuja in recent days amid concerns about possible demonstrations by groups expressing support for Iran.
In northern Nigeria, where a significant Shi’ite Muslim population has historically maintained ideological ties with Iran, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in recent days in rallies backing Tehran.
Nigeria has long faced security challenges, particularly in the northeast where extremist groups such as Boko Haram and its offshoot Islamic State West Africa Province have carried out attacks against civilians and government targets. While the latest U.S. warning did not directly link the potential threat to any specific group, officials often issue such alerts when intelligence suggests possible risks to diplomatic facilities.
The U.S. embassy advised American citizens to stay aware of their surroundings, avoid large gatherings, and monitor updates from embassy security officials while in the country.
