Born in 1942 in Ifewara, Osun State, Nigeria, Pastor Adeboye grew up in poverty. But with an insatiable thirst for knowledge, he pursued his education, earning a degree in mathematics from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and later, a master’s and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Lagos. His dream was to become Africa’s youngest Vice-Chancellor—but God had other plans.

In 1973, he joined RCCG, then a small church led by Reverend Josiah Akindayomi. Adeboye began as a translator, but his spiritual hunger stood out. When Akindayomi died in 1980, Adeboye—then a young, academically-minded man—was chosen as his successor, a decision that surprised many in the RCCG family.

Under Adeboye’s leadership, RCCG transformed into a global movement with parishes in over 190 nations. His teachings on holiness, faith, and prayer attracted millions. Programs like the Holy Ghost Congress and Holy Ghost Service became international gatherings, often marked by miracles—healings, supernatural breakthroughs, and prophetic revelations.

A notable moment in his global outreach was his 2004 crusade in The Gambia, titled “Let the Wind Blow.” Held at the national stadium, the event drew thousands, including many Muslims. The resulting wave of conversions was unprecedented, marking a spiritual turning point in the country.

Despite his prominence, Pastor Adeboye remains grounded. Known affectionately as “Daddy G.O.,” he is a devoted husband to Pastor Foluke Adeboye (Mummy G.O.), and father to four children, all involved in ministry. Their marriage, since 1967, is widely regarded as a model of love, unity, and shared vision.

However, life has not spared him from pain. On May 4, 2021, Pastor Adeboye’s third child, Pastor Dare Adeboye, died suddenly at 42. A vibrant youth pastor, Dare’s death shocked the RCCG community and raised difficult questions among believers. Yet, Pastor Adeboye responded with remarkable faith: “God understands. God knows. We cannot question Him.” His steadfastness in grief inspired many, shifting his teachings toward themes of eternity and readiness for heaven.

Pastor Adeboye’s life has also been marked by controversy. He has faced criticism for his teachings on tithing—especially a 2018 statement suggesting financial curses could result from non-tithing. Critics accused him of using fear to coerce giving, while Adeboye insisted he was teaching biblical principles, not enforcing doctrine. He has maintained that tithing is a matter of faith and personal conviction, not a requirement for salvation.

His traditional views on marriage—particularly encouraging women’s submission to their husbands—have sparked debates. Though some consider these views outdated, Pastor Adeboye defends them as biblical, pointing to his own marriage as an example of mutual respect and godly order.

Accusations about church wealth have also surfaced, particularly concerning RCCG’s global assets and private jets. Critics question the luxury, while supporters argue the funds fuel evangelism, education, and charity. Pastor Adeboye himself is known for his modest lifestyle, insisting that his personal resources are separate from church finances.

Despite scrutiny, his influence transcends religious circles. He counsels presidents, mentors young leaders, and steers one of the largest Christian networks in the world. RCCG’s outreach includes hospitals, schools, disaster relief, and prison ministries—testifying to a faith that is both spiritual and practical.

Pastor E.A. Adeboye’s journey from a small Nigerian village to a global pulpit is one of divine orchestration. At 83, he remains a faithful servant, refining his voice with each challenge.
