Ghana: Premier league player, Frimpong, killed in armed robbery attack

A member of Berekum Chelsea football club, Dominic Frimpong, has lost his life following a violent highway robbery in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, with authorities warning that the incident underscores rising security concerns on some of the country’s major road networks.

Frimpong: Rest-in-peace

In a statement issued on April 13, 2026, the Ghana Police Service confirmed that the attack occurred Sunday night along the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Nyinahin District, an area that has previously recorded sporadic armed robbery incidents targeting commercial vehicles.

Police said a VIP bus transporting about 30 players and officials of Berekum Chelsea was en route from Samreboi to Berekum when it was ambushed by six-armed men, three of whom were carrying pump-action guns. Such coordinated attacks on long-distance buses have become a growing concern in parts of Ghana, particularly in forested stretches of highways where security presence is limited.

In an attempt to evade the attackers, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which veered off the road into nearby bushland.

During the attack, player Dominic Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but later died while receiving treatment.

Another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, was reportedly robbed of GH¢4,500.

Investigators who examined the scene recovered two spent BB cartridges, which are expected to aid forensic analysis. The police say additional personnel and crime scene experts have been deployed, and a manhunt is underway to track down the suspects, Ghanaian Times, reports.

Authorities have also urged residents and commuters to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies, as concerns grow over the safety of road travel in some parts of the country.
