Nigerian football prospect Victor Udoh, whose career had taken him from Africa to some of Europe’s competitive football academies, has died at the age of 21, prompting an outpouring of grief from former clubs across the continent.
Udoh, a left-sided attacker known for his pace and attacking flair, had been steadily building a professional career in Europe. After developing his game in Belgium with Royal Antwerp, he earned opportunities at higher levels and was regarded as one of the young Nigerian talents making their mark abroad.
In February 2025, Udoh joined Southampton’s academy in England, where he spent six months with the club’s Under-21 squad. During his stint on England’s south coast, he made eight appearances in Premier League 2 before departing in September.
Prior to his move to Southampton, the Nigerian winger had progressed through the ranks at Royal Antwerp. He featured prominently for the Belgian club’s reserve side, the Young Reds, scoring 12 goals in 27 appearances and eventually breaking into the first team, where he went on to make 28 senior appearances.
Following his departure from Southampton, Udoh continued his football journey by signing for Czech second-division side Ceske Budejovice, hoping to further establish himself in European football.
Confirming the tragic news, Southampton expressed deep sadness over the loss of their former player.
“We are devastated by the tragic passing of former player Victor Udoh at the age of 21,” the club said in a statement posted on social media. “The thoughts of everyone at the club go out to Victor’s loved ones at this extremely difficult time.”
Royal Antwerp also paid tribute to the young Nigerian, remembering his contribution to the club and offering condolences to those closest to him.
“With great dismay, RAFC has learned of the passing of former player Victor Udoh,” the Belgian club said. “Our thoughts are with Victor’s family, friends, and loved ones. We wish them much strength, support, and warmth during this particularly difficult time.”
The circumstances surrounding Udoh’s death have not been publicly disclosed. His passing has shocked the football community, with tributes continuing to pour in for a player whose career showed considerable promise and whose life was cut tragically short.
