Nasir Ahmad El‑Rufai, who governed Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023, has been arrested and detained by Nigerian anti-corruption authorities amid mounting investigations into alleged fraud and related offences.
Operatives of Nigeria’s Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) recently searched El-Rufai’s residence in Abuja as part of an ongoing investigation. Authorities subsequently took the former governor into custody, reportedly after he had already spent time being questioned by other security agencies, including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services (DSS).
According to court proceedings, El-Rufai was detained following interrogation over alleged financial misconduct and related charges tied to his time in office. His detention also affected scheduled court proceedings, forcing a delay in his arraignment on separate charges involving alleged unlawful interception of communications.
Authorities have linked El-Rufai to a broader corruption probe involving alleged mismanagement of public funds and activities associated with his administration. While detailed charges against him personally are still unfolding, investigations are reportedly examining financial transactions, governance decisions, and alleged irregularities involving senior officials who served under his government.
Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies, including the ICPC and EFCC, have intensified efforts to investigate alleged corruption involving former public officials. Several aides and allies of El-Rufai have previously been charged or detained in connection with alleged fraud, money laundering, and diversion of public funds during his administration.
El-Rufai has strongly denied wrongdoing and has mounted legal challenges against the authorities. He recently filed a lawsuit seeking damages against anti-corruption agencies, accusing them of violating his fundamental rights during raids and detention.
His lawyers have argued that authorities acted unlawfully in attempting to arrest him previously and failed to follow proper legal procedures. They maintain that the former governor is cooperating with investigations while defending himself against what they describe as politically motivated allegations.
El-Rufai remains one of Nigeria’s most influential political figures and a key member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His arrest marks a significant development in Nigeria’s ongoing anti-corruption campaign targeting current and former public officials.
The case is expected to test Nigeria’s judicial and anti-corruption institutions and could have wider political implications ahead of future elections, particularly given El-Rufai’s prominent national profile and political influence.
Authorities are expected to formally arraign El-Rufai in court once investigations are completed and charges finalized. Legal proceedings will determine whether the allegations against him result in prosecution, bail, or dismissal.
