Arrest and detention of Ex-Governor El-Rufai sparks protests

Demonstrations have erupted in several areas of Kaduna State following the continued detention of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, as supporters and youth groups demand his release and raise concerns over what they describe as a breach of legal procedures.
The protests, which began earlier this week, saw groups of young people gathering in parts of Kaduna metropolis and nearby communities, chanting slogans and carrying placards calling for justice and respect for the rule of law. Organizers argued that keeping the former governor in custody while legal proceedings are ongoing undermines the principle of due process and creates uncertainty about the fairness of the judicial system.
The situation has also drawn reactions from opposition figures, who claim the arrest and continued detention of El-Rufai may reflect a broader effort to silence influential political voices. Some critics cited the recent arrest and arraignment of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, as part of what they allege is an emerging pattern of legal actions targeting prominent figures associated with past administrations. Authorities, however, maintain that anti-corruption investigations are being conducted in accordance with the law and without political interference.
El-Rufai, who governed Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023, returned to Nigeria earlier this month and voluntarily honored an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nigeria’s primary anti-corruption agency. According to reports, he presented himself at the commission’s headquarters for questioning. Two days later, he was transferred to the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), another federal anti-graft body responsible for investigating corruption in public institutions.
The ICPC has not publicly disclosed full details of the allegations, but officials indicated the detention is connected to ongoing investigations. Legal analysts note that under Nigerian law, suspects may be held while investigations continue, although prolonged detention without clear court rulings can become contentious.
El-Rufai remains a prominent and controversial figure in Nigerian politics. A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a key member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) during his governorship, he played a significant role in national political developments over the past decade. His supporters view the investigation as politically motivated, while others argue that anti-corruption efforts must apply equally to all public officials, regardless of status.
As protests continue, security agencies are monitoring the situation to prevent violence, while political observers warn that the outcome of the investigation could have wider implications for Nigeria’s political climate and public confidence in anti-corruption institutions.
