South Africa expels Israeli top diplomat, Ariel Seidman

In a strong and decisive move that resonates deeply across the continent and among Africans worldwide, South Africa has declared Israel’s Chargé d’Affaires in Pretoria, Ariel Seidman, persona non grata — meaning he is no longer welcome in the country.

The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) announced that Mr. Seidman must leave South Africa within 72 hours. This action comes after repeated unacceptable breaches of diplomatic rules that directly challenged South Africa’s independence and insulted its leadership.

Key reasons cited include:

  • Repeated insulting attacks on His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa via official Israeli social media channels.
  • Deliberate failure to notify DIRCO about planned visits by senior Israeli officials.

These actions amount to a gross abuse of diplomatic privileges and a clear violation of the Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations — the global standard that all nations, big or small, are expected to honour.

South Africa has long upheld the principle that no country — regardless of its power or alliances — has the right to undermine the sovereignty, dignity, or elected leaders of an independent African nation. This expulsion sends a clear message: Our sovereignty is non-negotiable, our President’s honour is sacred, and we will not tolerate arrogance or disrespect on our soil.

For many Africans and those in the diaspora — from Lagos to London, Nairobi to New York, Accra to Atlanta — this stand echoes the continent’s proud history of resisting external interference and defending self-determination. It reinforces South Africa’s role as a leading voice for African dignity on the global stage, especially amid ongoing tensions linked to broader issues of justice and international law.

The government urged Israel to ensure its diplomats respect South Africa and adhere to basic principles of mutual respect in future engagements.

This development marks a significant escalation in strained relations between Pretoria and Tel Aviv, following South Africa’s principled positions in international forums.
