UNT Dallas offers free tuition opportunity for Texas families

The University of North Texas at Dallas has unveiled an ambitious new initiative designed to make higher education more accessible for Texas families. Known as the Trailblazer Tuition Trust, the program will pay full tuition and mandatory fees for eligible Texas high school graduates pursuing their first bachelor’s degree at UNT Dallas for up to four years.

The announcement was made by Dr. Warren von Eschenbach during his formal investiture as the university’s fourth president, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s 15-year journey.
Speaking before faculty, students, alumni, civic leaders, and members of the UNT System Board of Regents at the UNT Dallas Student Center, Dr. von Eschenbach emphasized the university’s ongoing commitment to expanding educational opportunities for underserved communities.
“UNT Dallas continues to stand for access and opportunity for those who may have believed higher education was beyond their reach,” he said. “Education has the power to transform lives, strengthen communities, and create new possibilities for the future.”
At the heart of the president’s vision is the trailblazer tuition trust, which is aimed at supporting Texas families earning $100,000 or less annually. The initiative reflects UNT Dallas’ broader mission of preparing students not only for successful careers but also for meaningful leadership and lifelong impact in an evolving job market.
Dr. von Eschenbach explained that the university seeks to become a leading regional institution serving southern Dallas, Ellis County, and neighboring communities by combining academic excellence with practical career preparation, leadership training, and hands-on learning experiences.
Under the new program, qualifying students will receive coverage for full tuition and required fees for up to eight consecutive semesters. Funding will come through a combination of federal, state, and university grants and scholarships, allowing students to pursue their degrees without the financial burden of tuition expenses.
To qualify for the Trailblazer Tuition Trust, applicants must be graduating seniors from Texas high schools who plan to enroll at UNT Dallas in the fall semester. Students must also be Texas residents, qualify for the Federal Pell Grant and Priority Texas Grant funding, and come from households with a total family income of $100,000 or less. In addition, students must be admitted to UNT Dallas and submit a valid FAFSA by June 1, 2026.
Eligible students do not need to complete a separate application, as consideration for the program is automatic. To continue receiving the award each year, students must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA, remain in good academic standing, and stay enrolled full-time with at least 12 credit hours during both fall and spring semesters.
