Ebola resurfaces in Africa – American doctor contracts virus

The resurgence of Ebola in parts of Central and East Africa has triggered renewed global concern, after an American physician was confirmed among the latest victims infected with a rare and deadly strain of the virus.
Health authorities identified the doctor as Dr. Peter Stafford, who reportedly contracted the infection while caring for patients at Nyankunde Hospital in Congo, one of the regions at the center of the outbreak.
The current wave of infections is linked to the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, a less common form of the virus for which there is still no FDA-approved vaccine or specific treatment. Officials say the outbreak has already claimed more than 100 lives in Congo, while neighboring Uganda has recorded two fatalities connected to the disease.
As fears of cross-border transmission grow, the World Health Organization on Sunday officially classified the outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, signaling the seriousness of the rapidly evolving health crisis.
In the United States, the Trump administration responded by activating Title 42 measures for an initial 30-day period. The emergency order allows federal authorities to implement heightened health screenings and travel restrictions targeting individuals arriving from Ebola-affected regions in Africa.
Under the temporary rules, travelers without U.S. passports who have recently been in Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, or South Sudan within the last 21 days could face restrictions on entry into the country.
Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it is coordinating with airlines and border officials to monitor incoming passengers and identify anyone who may have been exposed to the virus during travel.
Despite the growing international response, U.S. health officials emphasized that the immediate threat to the American public remains low. However, they noted that the situation is being closely watched and additional public health actions could be introduced if conditions worsen.
