Radical Acceptance: Trusting God in every season of life

By Tony H.Smart

In a world often filled with uncertainty, disappointment, and unexpected challenges, believers are frequently reminded that faith is not only about victory but also about how one responds to life’s difficult realities. This message formed the heart of a sermon delivered on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at the RCCG Heaven’s Glorious Embassy Parish, Plano, Texas by Pastor Dr. Mrs. Ibi Omewah, who spoke on the topic “Radical Acceptance.”

Drawing from the Bible passage Psalm 46:10–11, which says, “Be still, and know that I am God,” Pastor Mrs. Omewah emphasized that radical acceptance is about trusting God even in situations we cannot change.

Understanding Radical Acceptance

According to Dr.Omewah, many people come to the Christian faith because they encounter life experiences such as failure, loss, rejection, and disappointment, moments when human strength alone is not enough. “Sometimes when these things happen, we become upset because we do not know how to handle them,” she explained. “Radical acceptance is trusting God in what we cannot change.”
She noted that certain aspects of life—such as one’s background, past experiences, or physical traits—are realities that cannot simply be altered. Rather than resisting them, believers are called to trust God within those realities.
Radical acceptance, she said, also means choosing to love and accept people that God brings into one’s life. “If God has accepted me, why can’t I accept others?” she asked.

Biblical Foundations of Acceptance

The sermon emphasized that the Bible repeatedly teaches believers to trust God’s sovereignty. Pastor Omewah referenced Isaiah 55:8, where Scripture reminds believers that God’s thoughts and ways are higher than human understanding.
Similarly, Ecclesiastes 3:1 declares that there is a time and season for everything under heaven, reinforcing the idea that life unfolds according to God’s divine timing.
“Sometimes God uses painful realities to transform us or to touch other lives,” she said. “Rejecting reality does not change reality. Instead, it can turn pain into deeper suffering.”

Seven Lessons on Radical Acceptance

During the message, the minister highlighted seven key principles about embracing life’s realities:

  1. Rejecting reality does not change reality.
  2. Rejecting reality can turn pain into suffering.
  3. Acceptance can reduce intense emotional turmoil.
  4. Acceptance allows people to see their options clearly.
  5. Acceptance enables effective action and progress.
  6. Acceptance reduces secondary emotional reactions such as bitterness or resentment.
  7. Refusing to accept reality keeps a person stuck.

“Fighting reality only multiplies our pain,” she said. “When we stop fighting, we create room for God to work.”

Biblical Examples of Radical Acceptance

The message also pointed to several biblical examples that demonstrate radical acceptance in action.
One example is found in Job 1:20–21, where Job responded to devastating loss by acknowledging God’s sovereignty rather than rebelling against his circumstances.

Another powerful moment is seen in Luke 22:42–43, where Jesus prayed before His crucifixion, saying, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” Pastor Omewah noted that Christ’s acceptance of the Father’s will made possible the salvation of humanity. The acceptance Jesus showed toward Zacchaeus, she added, also demonstrates how divine acceptance can transform lives.

Faith That Trusts God’s Plan

Radical acceptance, Pastor Omewah explained, is ultimately an act of faith. It means trusting that God understands the story of one’s life even when the current chapter seems confusing.
Referencing Proverbs 3:5–6, she encouraged believers to trust in the Lord rather than relying on their own understanding.
“Radical acceptance says, ‘I may not understand what is happening in my life, but I trust the One who is writing the story,’” she said.
This faith perspective is also reflected in Romans 8:28, which teaches that all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.

Acceptance in Relationships

Pastor Omewah also applied the message to relationships and family life. She emphasized that radical acceptance encourages patience, compassion, and commitment.
“No one is perfect,” she said. “We are all works in progress.” She noted that radical acceptance can strengthen marriages and relationships because it encourages people to see others through God’s grace rather than through judgment.
“Do not judge someone,” she cautioned. “You may forget that at one time you were worse than that person.”

Peace Through Surrender

One of the greatest blessings of radical acceptance, she explained, is peace. When believers surrender control to God, they experience a calm assurance that comes from trusting Him.
This peace is described in Philippians 4:7 as the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.
“When we release control to God, He gives us peace,” Pastor Omewah said. “Radical acceptance is being still and knowing that God is in charge.”

A Call to Faith

The message concluded with an encouragement for believers to acknowledge reality, stop judging others, and allow God to guide their lives. “Feel your emotions, but do not let your emotions control you,” she advised. “When we surrender to God, He helps us move forward.”
Pastor Omewah emphasized that God often works through circumstances that humans do not immediately understand, and that embracing radical acceptance can unlock purpose and destiny.
“This is also a great time to give your life to Jesus Christ,” she said. “When we trust Him completely, He turns even the most difficult situations into pathways for His glory.”
